Globalization, the Internet, social media, and communications have radically changed our global perspective and they have made it a necessity to develop a higher level of understanding of other cultures. We are expected to understand the values of other cultures regardless of our location in the world. Is your way of communicating with others changing?

As we are getting more and more interconnected with the rest of the planet and aiming to thrive socially, economically, intellectually, and professionally, it is more than evident that we need to increase our cultural awareness.

It does not matter how far we are from each other geographically, it is our human nature to have a desire to relate, connect, influence, and transform others.

Is the impact of globalization increasing your desire to go beyond the borders?

The answer is probably yes; globalization has not only influenced us socially and culturally but it has had an impact on the world economy as well. Business globalization has caused executives around the globe to aspire to become global leaders, who are able to influence people across cultural and national boundaries and excel at global innovation.

Cultural awareness is vital in order to acquire a global view and increase our cultural intelligence giving us a great advantage on everyday interactions which is a competitive advantage for today’s entrepreneurs who are constantly interacting virtually.

Keep in mind that culture is nothing more and nothing less than a group of behaviors that set apart the members of different groups, such as family, neighbors, friends, organizations, and country of origin, among others.

A few of the main areas that define our culture are:

• Family values
• Beliefs
• Assumptions
• Customs
• Daily behaviors

Nonetheless, our personality, education, the field of expertise, level of experience, cultural heritage, travels, organizations that we belong, among others, are also important elements of our present culture.

My recommendation as a starting point is to understand more about our own culture so we can have a point of reference.

We can start today with one easy exercise to make a list of our values, morals or standards of behavior important for us. We should then focus on those we believe in and practice daily

We may analyze for how long we have practiced those values and why they are important to us. This exercise will reveal a lot about our social, work, and communication style with others.
