Let’s get into why it is sometimes necessary for a disaster or accident to happen to force people to prioritize. Let’s also see what is the element that helps you avoid those difficult situations.

Watch Video

I think, most of us, have heard a story that goes like this: a couple of weeks ago a friend asked me to pray for her church’s Pastor. This caught my attention because we don’t usually get this kind of petition. I told my friend that I would totally do that for her, but I asked her to explain to me a bit more what the matter was. She told me that the Pastor was at the hospital in a very grave situation due to her high sugar and cholesterol levels which had caused a series of complications that affected his heart. But, thanks to the medical attention and his collaboration to get better, he was now well.

I think you know the rest of the story; if this Pastor hadn’t made his health a priority, the next part of the story would have been more unfortunate.

If we look at this matter from a business point-of-view, we can use as an example the fact that in the USA, according to the Office of Small Business Administration (SBA) in its 2018 report, it was confirmed that up to 80% of small businesses survive to their first year. A surprisingly high number, even more so when taking into consideration the general belief that most businesses fail during their first year.

However, it is a different story after the first year, where this number falls drastically. Only half of the small businesses that survive make it through the 5-year mark, with a range of 45 to 51% depending on the year the business started. Beyond this period, only one in three small businesses makes it to the 10-year mark and lives to tell the tale. I am sure that these businesses that made it did the adjustments at the right time both in their priorities and their strategic planning.

These types of stories, which I hope are not one of yours, can be seen and heard frequently. As an executive coach, mentor and trainer, I come across this kind of thing daily. I hear over and over again stories in which if the right decisions were taken, if priorities were established, and if the resources were managed this or another way, the results would have been different.

It is a fact that there are endless motives due to which these lamentable situations occur, but it is still irrefutable that one of the main reasons is the lack of strategic planning based on priorities.

As I have mentioned before, one of the challenges that exist to carefully choose our priorities and avoid the continuous waste of resources, and as we have seen today, the occurrence of a series of consequences that can prove to be fatal is that we are highly committed and passionate about some important areas of our life and not in others. In those areas that we are not, we must use our responsibility, our reason, and our compromise.

Don’t waste more precious time without taking the correct action. Establish your priorities and improve your personal and business strategy with the help of an executive coach.

This topic is not new at all; however, the novelty here is starting to employ a plan based on priorities so that starting today different results are achieved. We must not wait for something dramatic to happen in our lives or our businesses. If you are not making decisions in your day-to-day life based on your priorities and you continue not having a plan that helps you to make decisions according to them, you are literally exposing yourself to a high risk of having devastating results.

Would you like to have better results despite the current circumstances? Are you willing to step out of your comfort zone, face challenges, and live each day according to your priorities?

I invite you to talk about PRIORITIES and how to make them part of your days. Let’s build today a practical strategy that allows you to make the right decisions and have better results despite the circumstances. A strategy that allows you to stay out of your comfort zone, face challenges, and focus on your priorities.

Let’s see what makes you transform most of your activities into priorities, and what happens when you do not choose what should be a priority in your life.

Watch Video

Not so long ago I had a conversation with a businessman regarding his current projects. I asked him about some of his goals in the most important areas of his life, such as health, finances, family, etc., he shared with me a couple of his plans and what he would like to accomplish. I then asked him which of these goals were his priorities, and he answered – “Well, all of them, I want to accomplish all of them”-.

The challenge is not that the businessman wants to achieve all he wishes for in his life, the challenge here is for him to be able to maintain focus on what really reflects his values and beliefs. We cannot do everything at once, but we can manage our agendas with a high degree of intentionality and focus towards our priorities.

When everything is a priority, nothing is a priority. Frequently, one wants everyone to be happy, to be on good terms with everyone, to possess everything one wishes for, complete all our projects, or simply to be like some celebrity. The stress that comes with not being able to choose between everything you want to do and become, and transforming that into a priority, makes taking decisions daily a challenge.

You cannot possess everything, but you can have what you really wish for. You cannot be like that celebrity, but you can become the person you strive to be. It is just a matter of choosing:

What is really important for you? ;

What is it that you really wish to accomplish? and ;

In who do you honestly want to become?

It sounds easy, and it really is for a lot of people; it is no coincidence that those who can achieve high degree results and are successful have great clarity on their purpose, vision, mission, and priorities.

Personally, I believe that choosing what you wish to achieve in life is one of the most important decisions that every human being must take, but even more so, being able to keep this goal a priority is a true success.

What are your priorities?

Remember that a priority is not simply what you like to do or what you wish for. If you start to make everything you like a priority, this would be the start of the big challenge, which is probably the reason why many are stagnant and confused and do not know what to do first and what after.

As a coach, I notice that a lot of times there is not a lot of coherence between what people say they want to achieve (their priorities) and what they do in their daily life. Above all, I have noticed that their lack of persistence and passion in this that they define as their priority makes it clear that it really is not.

Another fundamental part of this challenge of carefully choosing our priorities, and avoiding the continuous waste of resources, is that we are highly committed and passionate in some important areas of our lives and not in others. There are areas in your life that, even though you are not passionate about being committed to them, are your responsibility and should be a priority, such as health or finances.

We love those fries and those chocolates with ice cream, but that doesn’t mean that they help us keep healthy. Likewise, there are those who love going shopping, when in reality they neither need what they are buying nor should they be spending their money that way.

Having priorities is a choice, even if it is because you are passionate about it or because it is your responsibility. If you are not working daily towards your priorities, this really indicates that you are not committed or that you do not have the ability to make a decision, which means you will not achieve anything.

Let’s examine what happens when we pay too much attention to small demands and let’s see what makes it so that some are not capable of finishing the projects they started.

Watch Video

Some may say that paying attention to the little details directs us towards excellence. In fact, in several cases, these small details are what make the difference between good and excellent. Unfortunately, when paying attention to these small details becomes something excessive, productivity is affected.

In the working environment, this excessive activity is known as “micromanagement”. This kind of management regularly generates insecurities, fears, and a noticeable reduction in productivity.

In general, those that perform this kind of management:

Focus on observing and fixing small details, most of the time unimportant ones, instead of keeping their focus on the general objective.

Are afraid of delegating tasks, thinking others will never be able to do it well.

Reject other people’s initiatives if they are not constantly consulted.

Wish to know the processes in detail and start to intervene in areas that are not of their competence.

Continuously question others’ decisions as to not lose control over everyone else or over the projects.

This type of management can occur due to power-craving, inability to delegate, or lack of focus.

The consequences in an organization can be catastrophic, going from the deterioration of creativity and innovation, which are essential for growth in the whole organization, to the loss of the best leaders who leave the organization due to the constant pressure under which they must work.

There are ways to improve this tendency towards micromanagement, some very efficient ones are:

Enrich your perspective with Executive coaching, which I personally believe to be the best option and the one that gives the best results.

Develop your leadership, wishing the desire to control and supervise to eagerness to influence and empower others.

Improve focus on results and not only on the processes.

Utilize strategies for creativity and innovation, which allow for the development of everyone else’s potential

The power of focus has a direct impact on the most valuable resource that you and I and any entrepreneur can lose: time. One of the biggest reasons why goals are not achieved is that a bigger investment of time is done on performing secondary or tertiary tasks.

In addition, an environment is created that demotivates teams due to the loss of creativity and autonomy. Possibly one of the most destructive consequences of any project or team is the reduced vision of a leader who is focused on the smallest details.

It is no surprise that there is a stagnation of a lot of personal and business projects when there is an excessive focus put on secondary or insignificant tasks. Even less, it should not be surprising to know that a lot of projects are not set forth due to the lack of focus on a strategic vision.

Let’s talk about how having too many priorities is a challenge and why it can even paralyze you. Let’s see also what is it that mainly makes people have many priorities.

Watch Video

I think most of us have experienced days when our to-do lists are long, our desks are piled with papers, our cell phones are ringing or beeping with a lot of unread messages, in addition to those that reach our desk with requests. In this scenario, you can add a series of personal responsibilities and a large number of distractions that come through our cell phones or tablets. So, with these countless activities, it is not surprising that people are paralyzed, without knowing what they should pay attention first.

Setting priorities is not a simple task; it can be complex, not only because of the pressures, challenges, and sometimes unexpected situations of each day but also because of the misunderstanding that exists between what is urgent, important, and a priority. Let’s look at them in detail:

Urgent activities are those that because there is no more time to postpone them, they must be addressed immediately.

However, we have to be clear, that one thing is that you have an unexpected or unplanned situation or adversity and you have to take action immediately – at the moment, and another thing is that due to procrastination, negligence, laziness, or lack of focus you have left an activity for the last moment. These are not the best activities to be with every day.

Important activities are those that you must do within a time planned. These activities are directly related to what is important and a priority in your life.

These are activities that must be planned in advance and managed on the daily basis; they are those that allow us to successfully fulfill our commitment with ourselves and with our projects. Those who handle important activities and their resources well are those who avoid wasting time and effort and are not dedicated to putting out fires.

Priorities are the ones that go first or before other activities. They are the ones that should give meaning to your life and represent your values and beliefs.

Priorities reflect in your life what is really valuable to you and deserves your attention, focus, and energy. By having your priorities clear, in the areas of your life that matter, such as your health, finances, relationships, profession, among others, you begin to give an elevated meaning to your life and to have the right focus on your daily activities.

But we must be careful and have the right priorities, remember the old proverb “if you chase two rabbits, both will escape.”

For those who have too many priorities, often the day is not enough to cover the activities that these areas require; even less if there are distractions and a lack of planning. The result is that your days are used between the urgent and the mundane, so unfortunately your priorities and important activities are being left behind.

Each day your priorities dispute your energy and your time, so it is not rare for people who are confused between the urgent, important, and a priority to become paralyzed, lose focus, and do not know what to do first or what to do next or what it is the next step. The paralysis produced by having too many priorities is one of the challenges to productivity.

Let’s discuss why priorities are vital for anyone and for leaders in particular. Also, we will talk about what is that one thing that usually confused most people, when it comes to priorities.

Watch Video

We had heard people talking about time management for many years, at schools, workplaces, even at home. But, the reality is that time can’t be managed. No one can change it, control it, or extended it. All of us have 24 hours per day and 7 days per week. That is a fact; yet, we would like to know, how we can obtain the best of the time we have.

For anyone who would like to be productive and have better results, the question is not: will my daily agenda be full? But who and what will fill my daily agenda?

If you feel that you don’t have enough time, that the day is gone and you still have many things to do on your list, is time to examine yourself, your choices, your calendar, your agenda, and the most important area, your priorities. Examine them, because, these are the things that you can control.

We need to determine how we will spend the most valuable resource: our time. That requires us to prioritize our time so we get more production out of those hours. How are you spending the twenty-four hours that you have every day?

For a leader, the ability to prioritize is fundamental because leaders are impacting so many other people. That’s why I want to help you identify what you ought to want as a leader, according to your priorities.

So, let’s start understanding that there are two difficult things to do: to establish priorities and to do things in order of importance.

Nobody escapes the pressures of today’s fast lifestyles, and because we all deal with demands, deadlines, and difficulties, we can get confused when it comes to our priorities.

Most people overestimate the importance of a large number of things. You probably have a long list of things to do; however, not all of them are important, nor are priorities.

There is a difference between, urgent things to do, important things to do, and priorities. This is usually what confused most people when it comes to priorities. Psychologist William James said, “The art of being wise is knowing what to overlook” isn’t it a great reminder to all of us? We need to stop thinking that all things are important; even more, than they are priorities. Petty and mundane tasks threaten to steal much of our time. If we are not careful, we can start living for the wrong things and wasting our most valuable resources.

So, let’s find more about priorities, and let’s find out where we need to focus our attention and resources.

Question: How can you be beneficial if you focus on your priorities?

I think this statement is not far from reality. Look around and ask yourself: What you have, what you do, what you are until today, is the product of your thoughts? The answer to this question is probably different for each of us.

However, in my experience, having a positive mindset or as we usually say, good thinking, has a great influence on everything we do and achieve. How are you using your thinking?

Watch Video

Over the years of my personal and professional development, among other things, I have learned that positive thinking is a decision. Furthermore, I learned that you cannot change the past, you can only learn from it. Even more, the only guarantee that tomorrow will be better is if you continue to grow today. But, having this understanding is not enough, it is critical to act.

To go from being a good thinker to have great ideas is a decision we must take every day. Unfortunately, we live in a sensational world which, for the most part, feeds us on negativism. If we are not careful, these negative thoughts can easily limit us.

Likewise, we must be selective in what we allow to feed our minds. Nurturing our thinking is vital to produce the best ideas. If your environment has negative people or you are constantly listening to negative information, unfortunately, you will not be able to produce positive thoughts.

Therefore, I think that the most practical and safest thing is to develop the habit of thinking. It sounds obvious, but it really is not. Many people take thinking for granted, see it as a natural function of life. But in reality, people are thinking during the day without a guide. To increase the ability to think well we need to be intentional; as well as think with a clear focus and towards a specific goal.

What can help you create the habit and intention to be a great thinker? Consider to:

Find a place that allows you to think and have moments of reflection or prayer. Some people have a favorite room or corner in the place where they live, others prefer to be close to nature. Whatever this place is, it will be so much better if you can cut down on the interruptions.

Set aside time to think daily. Either in the morning or before going to sleep. Try to find that moment in the day when you think best. Then schedule it daily to achieve it.

Use your thinking to focus on your priorities. Be clear about what your priorities are in the important areas of your life. Meditate on what you must do to achieve them and how you are going to do it.

Capture your thoughts before you lose them. Have writing tools with you, whether it is your phone, paper, and pencil, or your journal.Writing your ideas as they come to mind can sometimes be difficult, either because you do not have the tools to write them down or perhaps you are driving. A practical idea is to use your cell phone to record audio and then listen to it to write it in your agenda or even to text it to yourself.

Get together with great thinkers. Find a mentor who teaches you techniques to develop your mindset or a coach with whom you can have intentional brainstorms. If you spend time with great thinkers you will improve your thinking, for sure.

One of my mentors helped me understand that if we do not pay attention to what we think, we are producing a series of mediocre ideas or some little use.

However, if we make the decision to think correctly, we become good thinkers, and if we cultivate this habit over time, we will become great thinkers.

Furthermore, if your thoughts are focused on your priorities, with the use of your creativity, you will generate great ideas.

Question: How can you improve your thinking?

It’s almost certain that if this happened to you, you wouldn’t buy this product again or recommend it to someone else.

If we mention what is “average” the list is long. For example services, companies, projects, relationships, and all the things that are not done with excellence. If people have the ability to achieve a high level of excellence, why do many fail?

Watch Video

Surprisingly, not all people have a story to share when we talk about achieving a high level of excellence. Finding out where we achieve excellence is a process that can take time and study. Fortunately, the ability to achieve excellence has a lot to do with knowing your strengths.

Without having a clear idea of your strengths, not only is it difficult to achieve excellence in everything you do, but you will easily be wasting years trying to improve in areas where you will never be great. For many, for example, it will mean having a job where you only survive because you are constantly fighting against what you have to do, instead of working on what you really want or love to do.

One of the greatest challenges of not being in your strength zone is that you have the possibility to be mediocre or average. Personally, I think the most critical of all these challenges is the risk of living a life without purpose or meaning.

Your strengths are related to your purpose and what you dream to accomplish in your life. Knowing your strengths has many benefits like:

Increase confidence in yourself,

Increase your productivity,

Achieve excellence in everything you do,

Achieve high levels of results,

Optimize the ability to find opportunities,

Develop your potential.

Staying in the strength zone gives you greater profits, simply because you thrive in your strengths and that means that you do not need to invest a lot of time or effort to get there.

So, let’s have a look: how can you recognize your strengths?

Who knows you? Start by having a vote of confidence in those who know you and have been around you for years: your family, friends, or perhaps your coworkers. Ask them: what do you think I’m outstanding at? What are my best qualities? Those close to you know your best qualities as well as your weaknesses.

Have you taken a personality test lately? Your personality affects all areas of your life. When you recognize your strengths and weaknesses you can give the best of yourself. In this test, you will not only find your strengths, but also your behavior, communication, and work styles.

What do you learn when you make a mistake? The best way to know our strengths or weaknesses is in the moments of success or failure. Every setback you have is an opportunity to put your strengths to the test.

Are you evaluating your experiences? It is said that experiences are a source of learning, but the truth is that experiences without evaluation are not the best teacher. When we evaluate our experiences and reflect on what we have learned, they become the source of the knowledge we need, allowing us to find evidence of our strengths.

By discovering your strengths and staying with them you increase your productivity and the ability to develop your potential. The reality is that people and organizations do not pay for mediocrity. Nor do they recognize average employees, contracts, projects, etc.

Success does not accept mediocrity. If you want to achieve your goals or reach your next level of achievement, you need to be close to your strengths and use them daily.

Let’s get into why it is sometimes necessary for a disaster or accident to happen to force people to prioritize. Let’s also see what is the element that helps you avoid those difficult situations.

I think, most of us, have heard a story that goes like this: a couple of weeks ago a friend asked me to pray for her church’s Pastor. This caught my attention, because we don’t usually get this kind of petitions. I told my friend that I would totally do that for her, but I asked her to explain to me a bit more what the matter was. She told me that the Pastor was at the hospital in a very grave situation due to her high sugar and cholesterol levels which had caused a series of complications that affected his heart. But, thanks to the medical attention and his collaboration to getting better, he was now well.

I think you know the rest of the story; if this Pastor hadn’t made his health a priority, the next part of the story would have been more unfortunate.

“

One of the challenges today is to carefully choose our priorities and avoid the continuous waste of resources.
—DR. LIANA C. SáENZ

These types of stories, which I hope is not one of yours, can be seen and heard frequently. As an executive coach, mentor and trainer, I come across this kind of things daily.

As I have mentioned before, one of the challenges that exists to carefully choose our priorities and avoid the continuous waste of resources, and as we have seen today, the occurrence of a series of consequences that can prove to be fatal, is that we are highly committed and passionate about some important areas of our life and not in others. In those areas that we are not, we must use our responsibility, our reason, and our compromise.

This topic is not new at all; however, the novelty is starting to employ a plan based on priorities so that starting today different results are achieved. We must not wait for something dramatic to happen in our lives or our businesses. If you are not making decisions in your day to day life based on your priorities and you continue not having a plan that helps you to make decisions according to them, you are literally exposing yourself to a high risk of having devastating results.

Don’t waste more precious time without taking the correct action. Establish your priorities and improve your personal and business strategy with the help of an executive coach.

Question: Do you have a plan for your priorities?

Let’s see what makes you transform most of your activities into priorities, and what happens when you do not choose what should be a priority in your life.

The challenge is not that the businessman wants to achieve all he wishes for in his life, the challenge here is for him to be able to maintain focus in what really reflects his values and beliefs. We cannot do everything at once, but we can manage our agendas with a high degree of intentionality and focus on our priorities.

When everything is a priority, nothing is a priority. Frequently, one wants: for everyone to be happy, to be on good terms with everyone, to possess everything one wishes for, complete all our projects, or simply to be like some celebrity. The stress that comes with not being able to choose between everything you want to do and become, and transforming that into a priority, makes taking decisions daily into a challenge.

You cannot possess everything, but you can have what you really wish for. You cannot be like that celebrity, but you can become the person you strive to be. It is just a matter of choosing:

What is really important for you,

What is it that you really wish to accomplish, and

In who you honestly want to become.

If you start to make everything you like into a priority, this would be the start of the big challenge, which is probably the reason why many are stagnant and confused and do not know what to do first and what after.

As a coach, I notice that in a lot of times there is not a lot of coherence between what people say they want to achieve (their priorities) and what they do in their daily life.

There are areas in your life that, even though you are not passionate about being committed to them, they are your responsibility and should be a priority, such as health or finances.

Don’t waste more precious time without taking the correct action. Establish your priorities and improve your personal and business strategy with the help of an executive coach.

Let’s examine what happens when we pay too much attention to small demands and let’s see what makes it so that some are not capable of finishing the projects they started.

Some may say that paying attention to the little details directs us towards excellence. In fact, in several cases, these small details are what makes the difference between good and excellent. Unfortunately, when paying attention to these small details becomes something excessive, productivity is affected.

The excessive focus on secondary or insignificant tasks is one of the causes of stagnation in a project.
—DR. LIANA C. SáENZ

In the working environment, this excessive activity is known as “micromanagement”. This kind of management regularly generates insecurities, fears and a noticeable reduction in productivity.
In general, those that perform this kind of management:

Focus in observing and fixing small details, most of the time unimportant ones, instead of keeping their focus on the general objective.

This type of management can occur due to power-craving, inability to delegate or lack of focus.

Develop your leadership, wishing the desire to control and supervise to the eagerness to influence and empower others.

Possibly one of the most destructive consequences of any project or teams is the reduced vision of a leader who is focused on the smallest details.

It is no surprise that there is a stagnation of a lot of personal and business projects when there is an excessive focus put on secondary or insignificant tasks. Even less, it should not be surprising to know that a lot of projects are not set forth due to the lack of focus on a strategic vision.

Don’t waste more precious time without taking the correct action. Establish your priorities and improve your personal and business strategy with the help of an executive coach.

Question: Are you focusing too much on the small details?
