LEADING IN A GLOBALIZED WORLD – VI

A Global Mindset Includes The Ability To Adapt To New Cultures

A perfect example of how global leadership looks and how it influences culture is the creation by The Coca-Cola Company of the image and concept of Santa Claus. It’s been years since this concept was created, and without a doubt, they appropriated this image. They made it a tradition for their brand. Every year during the Christmas holidays, it is hard not to associate the idea of Santa with this drink.

Having the ability to extend our influence and to lead beyond our culture, is a vital element to manage a team and an organization successfully in a globalized world.

Have you thought about the influence of certain commercial images on your daily life?

That is why every day we see how many companies strive to reach more cultures with their strategies, expand their services or products through marketing campaigns, international commercial collaborations and they also ensure they have a team of global leaders to reach their target.

A global leader is able to:

  • Expand a team or corporate vision,
  • Develop the tools to influence other cultures and
  • Keep a simple language to better communicate with other international colleagues

If you are already leading an international or multicultural organization for a while and your strategies toward new markets have been adequate, you need to reach the next level.  The time is now!

A global mentality has the ability to adapt to new cultures.  This requires being able to take risks, most importantly in new situations, and having a good level of self-confidence when it comes to committing or influencing others.

This type of mentality perceives the energy level, instead of feeling intimidated by a new environment or a different culture.

If you don’t know how to develop your ability to adapt to new cultures an excellent starting point is:

  • By learning how to take risks, taking yourself out of your comfort zone, encouraging you to meet and relate to people from another culture, either personally or virtually.
  • You may also, encourage yourself to learn other languages, which is a simple and intellectually nourishing way to connect with new cultures and to learn a little more about their customs.
In many parts of the world, languages are varied and each dialect changes according to the experiences, media and cultural preservation. And although in some countries, the second language is usually English, it is literally in their mother tongue, where you can find the true essence of their people and history.
  • Being able to start conversations with new people will begin to pave your way towards adaptation, which will soon impact your ability to develop a global mentality and a new culture at the same time.
  • Being comfortable in new situations, having a good level of self-confidence instead of feeling intimidated by a new environment or a different culture.

Does not matter if you are leading a multinational organization, trying to recruit a diverse talent, developing your business in multicultural settings, or reaching foreign markets, the global mindset is a key personal and business skill required for your success.
